Upscale, remake, repurpose, redesign…
Call it what you want but I love turning old into new
again! When I was a freshman in high
school my mom got me a huge box of hand-me-downs from my cousin. I was excited to find all these beautiful
clothes except we were wearing miniskirts and these were old style and maxi
skirts! Too embarrassed to wear the
outfits, I got out the sewing machine and scissors. Every outfit was redesigned and ready to
wear. Since then everything I see I
immediately remake in my mind, finding so many ways to recreate it.
Today we will celebrate Pattie Lascelle, President of American
Sewing Guild Prescott, AZ, and two of her “man shirt” remakes. She is the best designer, creator, sewer, and
organizer I have ever met. She has put
on several trunk shows for our club and done many sewing demonstrations.
MAN SHIRT REMAKE By Pattie Lascelle
The Eyelet Ruffle:
Standard man's
shirt that I cut the sleeves off and reset to fit my body. I also had to
take in the side seams to make the garment smaller. I cut off the bottom
of the shirt and added a wide eyelet ruffle.
The 3 Shirts Into 1:
The other one is a combination of 3
different men's shirts. The cuff from one was used as a faux pocket, the collar
points were used as accents on the pockets and the back yoke. The front tab of
one shirt was used down the back center. The sleeves are a combination of
all three shirts. The base shirt sleeves were cut off and replaced but had to
be reset to fit my body. After finishing the shirt, I realized it wasn't
large enough thru my hips so I had to add pleats on each side to accommodate
the fit.
